Walking Safari
14 Days; 13 Nights

Up for adventure? Enjoy this unique opportunity to safari on foot, walking with the Maasai and abundant wildlife across the savanna.

Day 1: Meet you at Kilimanjaro international airport transfer to Arusha.

The day you take your flight from your country to destination country of your safari, your arrival might be at night or day depending on the airline you bought your flight ticket coming to Tanzania but we will be there waiting to pick you up at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the nearby landing of northern safari circuit. Arrive at Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to peaceful hotels or lodges, the oasis within Arusha set up for beautiful landscaped coffee and tea plantations. Arusha is a pure tranquility with spectacular views of Mount Meru. Your guide is waiting for you outside the open door at the airport with a sign of your name or group name arriving or with a company sign. The driver will take you to Arusha or a place reserved for you, dinner and overnight Arusha town or place of your reservation.

 

Day 2: Lake Eyasi.

Drive from the hotel in the morning to Lake Eyasi (approximately 3 hour drive). On the second day afternoon you can meet the Datoga tribe, famous for being the ‘blacksmiths of Tanzania’.  Later afternoon your guide can take you for a walking safari around the edge of the lake, spotting out for some of the beautiful birdlife for which Lake Eyasi is famous.  You will have dinner and overnight near Lake Eyasi.

 

Day 3: Track the Hadzabe Bushmen Full day.

Have usual routine of breakfast at the camp and be ready for Bushmen experience, a full day Hadzabe walk, dance, walk and talk with them in Lake Eyasi. With an estimated population of less than 2,000 individuals, the Hadzabe are one of the last tribes to stay true to their tribal history. Existing far from the crowds and globalization that inevitably follow tourism, they exist much as they always have. 

Start off early with your bushman guide to meet a group of resident Hadzabe people. Enjoy the Hadzabe walking trip into the bush with the only hunter-gatherers remaining in the East African region. The Hadzabe speak a click-based language and move their encampments with the seasonal movements of the wildlife. Your guide is a member of the group so he will explain to you about their customs and their way of life. You will get a chance to hunt, track wildlife, make fire and even take honey from bee’s nests with the Hadzabe people. Return to the camp for lunch then afternoon proceeds with the activity, overnight at the camp of the lake shore.

 

Day 4: Lake Eyasi to Maasai village at Ngorongoro Conservation area.

After breakfast at the camp of the lake shore depart to Ngorongoro via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you head to the Maasai boma in a Maasai village and stay overnight in the boma with the Maasai people. During the arrival to the boma, the warriors and women will receive you with songs and Maasai dances in celebration with the Maasai culture as you discover how women milk and take care of the family, and explore the Maasai architecture and get Maasai boma orientation. Dinner and overnight in a Maasai boma at the village.

 

Day 5: Maasai village walk to Bulati campsite.

After breakfast at the boma in the early morning before you leave to a first campsite at Ngorongoro conservation area you will observe the routine of Maasai boma chores as you can get a chance to see the beginning of Maasai herding at quite early. A possibility for you to meet an elder of spiritual power was prepared as you can get an opportunity to visit and see the spiritual leader of the Maasai for wisdom and prophecy called Oloiboni to understand the future for the people, livestock and land.

 

After the spiritual leader of the Maasai at the village you load the donkeys to carry things for a walk to Bulati campsite. The Maasai warriors will herd the donkeys and you all walk from the boma to Bulati campsite with a ranger. On the way you will pass the Maasai bomas and get an opportunity to see different animals while crossing Emburbul depression. Arrival to the campsite you head to the bush for the famous feast called orpul at the middle of the bush near the campsite. The Maasai warriors in the bush camp near the bomas will show you orpul experience, as a goat will be slaughtered by warriors for you and make the famous Maasai bush barbecue and learn about the Maasai medicinal plants. Orpul is a mental, body and spiritual healing in the bush since the medicinal plants mixed with soup are very significant at orpul uses, overnight at the campsite.

Day 6: Bulati walk to Empakai Crater.

After breakfast you all load donkeys and start a walk to Empakai Crater. Lunch at Empakai campsite then after lunch you take a walk to Empakai crater with warriors and a ranger to see the amazing beautiful landscape and wildlife. Upon exploring Empakai crater you walk back to the campsite.

 

Day 7: Empakai Crater to Ormoti.

After breakfast at the campsite you start a walk towards Ormoti crater with the warriors and rangers. This will be the best walk to see the fresh droppings of wildlife and the wonders of nature. In the Maasai warriors bush camp you get an opportunity to learn about medicinal plants once again, how the Maasai live in the bush overnight for days as you listen to the narratives of Maasai warriors bravery and you will experience the quiet moments of the bush while listening to the sound of nature. You sleep with the warriors in the bush, overnight at the campsite.

 

Day 8: Ormoti crater to Acacia. 

After early breakfast your driver will pick you to Empakai where the walk will start again with donkeys to carry your staff. The views along the trail downwards are spectacular at every point. All along you can enjoy the changing views of Empakaai itself and in addition from the northern and eastern side you can look out to the dramatic cone of the still active volcano, Oldoinyo Lengai and interact with wildlife along the way then arrive to acacia, dinner and overnight acacia campsite.

Day 9: Acacia to Lake Natron.

After breakfast at the acacia you begin another walk towards the volcano area. The last stage of the journey is not too long and it goes mainly downhill. The highlights of the trek are the great views of Oldonyo Lengai, Lake Natron and the Rift Valley, the most geological place ever seen. The rugged countryside looks almost surreal covered by grey ash of the last eruption in 2007. The trek descends down into the dry and hot Rift Valley, where the ash can be seen up close. Around lunchtime at the picnic area you will rest under the acacia to enjoy your lunch at the quiet boundary of nature. Dinner and overnight at the campsite near the lake shore of Natron.

 

Day 10: Lake Natron.

After the breakfast at the camp the driver will drive you far to the west part of the lake to explore the flamingos' breeding sites and learn about their migration pattern to various East African saline lakes then drive to the foot of Oldoinyo Lengai, the mountain of God for a pilgrimage which is pretty significant for the spiritual wellbeing of the Maasai. You will experience the songs of the Maasai to praise nature God living at the mountain and other ways to invokes their ancestors as you will get an opportunity to learn how the Maasai sacrifice a sheep at the foot of the mountain for their prayers to God. After the foot of the mountain pilgrimage you return to the camp for lunch to be followed by a day hike to waterfalls for a natural swim. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 11: Lake Natron to Serengeti.

On this day you will head into the Serengeti national park through Loliondo the land of Maasai people to clain’s gate and spend two days exploring this amazing park. At the end of each game drive you will head to the camp in the middle of Serengeti where you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. The park is famous for the migration involving about 1.5 million herbivores and thousands of predators waiting to prey while the hunted animals fleeing drought in search of fresh water and grazing. Dinner and overnight campsite.

 

Day 12: Serengeti full day.

You will find yourself sleeping and waking up in Serengeti national park with lions roar. The day is devoted to full game drive with many opportunities to get that “perfect shot” with your camera. The Serengeti is one of the most stunning wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Dinner and overnight campsite.

Day 13: Serengeti to Ngorongoro.

After breakfast at the campsite you depart to Ngorongoro Conservation area. In this day you will have a game in route toward Ngorongoro crater. Dinner and overnight at the campsite of the rim of the crater.

 

Day 14: Ngorongoro to Arusha.

After breakfast very early morning you descend 600m into this magnificent crater for a full-day game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely crowded African wildlife areas in the world and is home to an estimated 30,000 animals including some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhino. Late afternoon transfer to Arusha for airport drop off to catch up with your flight.
